Stay calm and check for injuries
Car accidents can happen anywhere, including on the freeway, in a parking lot, or while stopped in traffic. First, check yourself and your passengers. If anyone may be seriously hurt, call 911 right away.
Move to safety
If the vehicles can be moved safely, pull over and turn on your hazard lights. Do not leave the scene.
Document what happened
Take clear photos of the vehicles, license plates, damage, road, traffic signs, and surrounding area. If there are witnesses, ask for their names and contact information.
- Exchange the other driver's name, phone number, driver's license, license plate, and insurance information.
Report the accident when required
Call the police for injuries, serious damage, unsafe conditions, or when you need help at the scene. California also has reporting rules for certain accidents, so do not assume an insurance call is the only report you may need.
Pay attention to your body
Even if you feel okay immediately after the crash, pain can appear hours or days later. Get medical attention if you have pain, dizziness, numbness, headaches, or another concerning symptom. Keep copies of your medical records and bills.
Be careful with insurance conversations
Give accurate basic information, but do not guess about injuries or fault. Before signing a release or accepting a settlement, make sure you understand what it means.
