Insurance Is Asking for a Statement After an Accident

What To Know Before You Answer

Insurance companies often call soon after a crash. Before giving a recorded statement, understand who is asking, why they want it, and what may happen next.

First, identify who is calling

Your own insurer may require reasonable cooperation under your policy. The other driver's insurer does not represent you. Ask for the caller's name, company, claim number, and the purpose of the statement.

You do not have to guess

Stick to facts you clearly remember. It is okay to say you do not know or need to check. Do not guess about speed, distance, fault, or medical conditions.

Be careful with recorded statements

A recording can be reviewed later and used to evaluate the claim. Do not agree simply because the caller sounds friendly or says it will only take a few minutes. Ask whether it is required and consider getting advice first.

Do not minimize symptoms

If you are still being evaluated, say so accurately. Avoid broad statements such as 'I'm fine' when symptoms can develop later. Never exaggerate either - honesty and consistency matter.

Review documents before signing

A medical authorization or settlement release can have important consequences. Read the full document, ask what information it allows the insurer to obtain, and get help if you do not understand it.
